How NGL Operates
NationalGayLobby.Org is to a very great extent member and community driven. Discussions
which take place on their Discussion Boards or in their chat rooms, the results of their weekly Public Opinion Polls,
and the email they receive all help to keep their board of directors and executive director in touch with NGL's members'
and the community's views on important issues.
If the membership's input is needed about a proposal or a plan of action, an advisory is issued
and members respond either by casting an electronic vote or by email.
Does this mean that every day-to-day decision is voted on? Of course not. Most decisions are
made by an operating committee appointed by the board, or by the executive director in consultation.
Board of Directors
NationalGayLobby.Org's activities are directed by a board of directors elected from the membership.
All NGL Regular Members are eligible for election to the organization's board of directors.
There are 29 seats on the NGL board of directors; 28 elected members plus the executive director.
Board members serve two year terms. Approximately one third of the board is up for election each year. Board members
are nominated based on merit, commitment, and leadership ability. Each year, a number of NGL members who have take
it upon themselves to become active and assume leadership roles are invited to join the board for the coming year.
The Operating Committee
The Operating Committee is a group of people appointed by the board to oversee the organization's
day-to-day activities. This group is charged with making sure that NGL functions efficiently and effectively. The
Operating Committee always consists of at least five board members including the organization's executive director.
There are many ways for members to play leadership roles in NGL. Members may become moderators or
leaders for NGL's discussion boards and chat rooms. If a member has a particular interest in a certain issue, he
or she may decide to initiate or assist with organizing on-line or real time political actions. Or, a member or
members may decide to create a task force to monitor Religious Right or other anti-gay web pages. Those with strong
opinions or lots of energy may wish to contribute material for the website, or organize state or local NGL chapters
on-line or real time. There are many, many ways to become an active NGL member!
